What are people saying about

NEVER REGRET the PAIN?

“This book is a rare combination of stories.  Together they tell of an extraordinary woman with outsized dreams who left the life that was designed for her and plunged into another one.  Anyone who has triumphed in the face of loss--or hopes to do so--will be inspired by Sel Yackley's journey."

--Stephen Kinzer, former New York Times Bureau Chief in Istanbul and author of several books including "Crescent and Star: Turkey Between Two Worlds"

"Sel Yackley's memoir of her life before and after her husband's suicide shows us how courage and unconditional love carried her  beyond survival to boldly say, "never regret the pain."  Her wise and compassionate heart saved her and her children from despair and guided them to a rich and fulfilling future.”

--Enid Powell, writer, editor, teacher.

"Sel Yackley combines the observational skills of a journalist, the love of a mother, and the grief of a wife in this gripping tale of what happens to a family when one member suffers from bipolar disorder. Woven through her story are threads of history and of social justice, centering on the debate over capital punishment, with opposition in principle coming not from the defense table or civil liberties groups but from the front of the courtroom: the judge himself. His inner debates and torments are the center of this compelling story with lessons for all of us."

Today's Chicago Woman  July 2006

For an inspirational read, in Never Regret the Pain: Loving and Losing a Bipolar Spouse, former Chicago Tribune writer Sel Erder Yackley recalls the devastating effect her husband's mental illness had on her family, the lessons she learned and how she moved on to find peace.

Chicago Suburban Woman and Suburban Woman North Shore July/August 2006

This book is a page-turner...Frank, opposed to the death penalty, became manic and depressed following a murder trial where he was compelled by law to impose it. The experience was traumatic, his behavior became erratic and his depression deepened.

Bipolar Disorder, formerly called manic depression, is a mood disorder, which includes depression as well as mania. Symptoms of hyperactivity can progress to agitation, irritability, paranoia and grandiosity.  Like depression, it is believed bipolar illness is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
